Ruth Roman, born in Lynn Massachusetts to Lithuanian-Jewish Mary Pauline Gold and Abraham Roman Abraham Roman, was the 3rd daughter in their family. Her father, a carnival barker, was killed when she was a small little girl. This forced her mother to provide for her family through work as an attendant and a cleaner. Ruth was raised in the poor Boston tenement community in Massachusetts. She was a student in Boston. She quit the school she attended after only two years in pursuit of the profession of acting. Her chosen path proved to be fraught with difficulties and In New York, she obtained the opportunity to pose as stills in a magazine for crime However, the stage was not a match for her. Her next job was as a "hat check" woman at a nightclub until she decided to quit and relocated to Boston. She worked as an usherette during the early morning hours and also performed at the New England Repertory Company by the evening. This was her first ever permanent acting job. She earned a bachelor's certificate in drama at Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
